Bronze Sculpture titled, 'War and Peace'
When the last Red Man shall have perished, and the memory of our tribes people shall have become a myth among the White Man, these plains and woodlands will swarm with the invisible dead of my tribe, and when your childrens, children think themselves alone in the fields or in the silent woods, they will not be alone........... At night, when the streets of your cities and villages are silent and you thing them deserted, they will thong with returning hosts that once filled them and still love this beautiful land. The White Man will never be alone, let him be just and kind with my people, for the dead are not powerless............. they have only changed worlds.
The sculpture, 'War and Peace', symbolizes the spirit and pride of the Great Plains people during a time of warfare. It depicts the ceremonial attire worn by a Sioux warrior during preparation for battle. The garment is styled after an authentic Sioux war shirt, which dates back to about 1890 - the year of the infamous massacre of several hunbred Sioux by U.S.cavalry forces at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.
The traditional buckskin garment is elaborately ornamented with colored paints and narrow bands of beadwork. The shirt would normally be decorated with scalplocks after returning from a victorious battle. The noble warrior wears a simple headdress with golden eagle feathers attached, and carries an authentic Sioux metal pipe tomahawk.
The bronze sculpture is beautifully finished in colored patinas and paints. The piece is a limited edition of 30 and stands 24 inches(60.96cm) tall, including the marble base.
